Consumer Unit Upgrade Following an EICR
At Electricians 4 London Ltd, we recently completed a consumer unit (fuse board) replacement at a residential property in the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea following the findings of an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR).
The Electrical Problem
The Initial Inspection
During the EICR, several observations were identified indicating that the existing consumer unit no longer met the current requirements of BS 7671 (18th Edition Wiring Regulations). The installation required upgrading to improve electrical safety and ensure continued protection for the occupants.
Following approval from the client, we returned to carry out the replacement of the existing fuse board.
Our Solution
Scope of Works
The works included:
- Safe isolation of the electrical installation.
- Removal of the existing consumer unit.
- Supply and installation of a new metal-clad consumer unit compliant with the current Wiring Regulations.
- Installation of individual RCBO protection for each circuit, reducing the risk of complete power loss in the event of a fault.
- Installation of a Type 2 Surge Protection Device (SPD) to provide protection against transient overvoltages where required.
- Re-termination, identification, and testing of all existing circuits.
- Full inspection and testing of the installation following completion.
- Issue of an Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) and Building Regulations notification where applicable.
Why This Matters
Why Replace an Older Fuse Board?
A modern consumer unit significantly improves the safety of an electrical installation. New units provide enhanced protection against electric shock, overloads, short circuits, and transient voltage surges that can damage electrical equipment.
Replacing an outdated fuse board also helps ensure compliance with current electrical standards and can address recommendations identified during an EICR.
